Also, you can point any trespasser to this page and remind them on desirable behaviour and good communication rules inside our community. In FSFE's public mailing lists, decisions of exclusion will be taken by the Mailing list owner in agreement with FSFE's community team. = FSFE Community's Code Of Conduct = = Code of conduct at FSFE events = In events that are organised by the FSFE and our community we value and respect all people, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ability, shape, size or preferred desktop environment. We will not tolerate vilification, abuse or harassment in any form. We are aware that cultural differences may cause misunderstandings, so we will try to clarify these and smooth misunderstandings as they arise. However, we do not tolerate people who keep behaving against our code of conduct after they have been explained that their behaviour contradicts our social conventions. Participants who get aware of inappropriate behaviour and behaviour not complying with our code of conduct are asked to inform our community team, help the victim or find other participants who can help. Perpetrators behaving against our code of conduct can be expelled temporarily or permanently from FSFE events. Unacceptable harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion. Harassment also includes sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, unwelcome following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. Participants asked to stop any harassing behaviour are expected to comply immediately. = Social rules for good communication = The following rules for good communication derive from the acceptance of our code of conduct at FSFE events and give additional help for peaceful and collaborative communication. == Be respectful == In an organisation like FSFE, inevitably there will be people with whom you may disagree, or find it difficult to cooperate. Accept that, but even so, remain respectful. Disagreement is no excuse for poor behaviour or personal attacks, and a community in which people feel threatened is not a healthy community. == Assume good faith == FSFE contributors have many ways to further Free Software and work for freedom in the digital society, which may differ from your ways. Assume that other people are working towards the same goal. Note that many of our contributors are not native English speakers or may have different cultural backgrounds. == Be collaborative == FSFE is a complex organisation; there is always more to learn within FSFE. It's good to ask for help when you need it. Similarly, offers for help should be seen in the context of our shared goal of working for a Free Society. When you do something for the benefit of Free Software, be willing to explain to others how it works, so that they can build on your work to make it even better. == Try to be concise == Keep in mind that what you write once will be read by hundreds of persons. Writing a short email means people can understand the conversation as efficiently as possible. When a long explanation is necessary, consider adding a summary. Try to bring new arguments to a conversation so that each mail adds something unique to the thread, keeping in mind that the rest of the thread still contains the other messages with arguments that have already been made. Try to stay on topic, especially in discussions that are already fairly large. == Be open == Most ways of communication used within FSFE allow for public and private communication. You should preferably use public methods of communication for FSFE-related messages, unless posting something sensitive. This applies to messages for help or support by the FSFE as well; not only is a public support request much more likely to result in an answer to your question, it also makes sure that any inadvertent mistakes made by people answering your question will be more easily detected and corrected. = Guidelines for FSFE mailing lists = Following our social rules for good communication that is written above, we derive the following rules for behaviour on FSFE mailing lists * Avoid personal attacks. Disagreement and technical criticism is good for democratic decisions and supposed to be a good thing, as long as you stay on topic and avoid personal attacks. * Do not post or cite private mails to you on public mailing lists without permission of the initial author * Explain yourself and try to understand other people's arguments. Avoid citing out of context or misleading snippets. When other people do not understand you, avoid repeating yourself but better try to explain it another way. * 99% of our community are engaging in their spare time and have other hobbies or duties aside. Before blaming someone to be late, give everyone enough time to react (minimum of 48h) and respect weekends for many people as a time to be offline. * Try to keep to rules of Mailing List Netiquette. This includes to avoid multiposting, cross-posting, off-topic posting or hijacking a discussion thread. Also, please use methods to minimize the effort required to read a post or a thread.
