Introduction to Peertube

Peertube is a free and open-source, decentralized, federated video platform, that uses peer-to-peer technology to reduce load on individual servers when viewing videos.(wikipedia). As FSFE we are currently deploying our own instance under media.fsfe.org. The code for our instance can be found in the git: fsfe-system-hackers/peertube.

Upload a video

In order to upload a video you need to login into peertube. For this go to media.fsfe.org and open the Passbolt Add-on in your browser. There you find the Username and Password. Now you can start to upload your video.

go to publish (a blue button at the top of the page)
Choose if you want to import the video as a file (which should be saved on your device in order to select it) or to import with URL. To import it with URL you can copy any link to the video. No matter if it is on the download server or on youtube.
Choose a title, some tags (fsfe, free software, libre software, etc.) and write a short description of the video. Please have a look at the description that are already beneath the published videos or check with someone more experienced if your description is alright.
Select the Channel (If there is no specific channel upload it to FSFE Main Channel).
Select the Category, licence and language.
Select if the video should already be public (anyone can see it), Unlisted (only people with the link can see it), private (only people who are logged in into the FSFE-peertube account can see it) or internal (only people who have an account on media.fsfe.org can see the video - mind this isn't possible for now, as we do not allow to create accounts on media.fsfe.org).
You are ready to go and can publish the video.

If you would like to include some subtitles you can add them under Caption. Before you upload them make sure they are in a proper format. Then click on Add another caption. A new pop-up window will open and guide you through the process. Afterwards please save your changes.

If you want to change the preview picture go to Advanced settings. There you can choose another picture by clicking on the Edit button. The picture has to be on your device in order to upload it.

After the video is ready and published make sure you give a thumbs up to the video.
