Booth design

How to design a booth

This page shall help you to set-up and design your personal FSFE booth. Because although that each booth is different, we try to represent a corporate identity. Also, we like to share good and bad practices to learn from each other.

Below you find various pictures of booths from the FSFE. They have different characteristics and each has its pros and cons. What is best depends on the audience and the event itself. You may want to follow a similar style as other booths at the event, but you also want to be different enough that people notice!

Make a good first impression

There is no second chance for the first impression, so pay attention to your appearance

  • There should ideally be two people at the booth the whole time. If you are two person, one can be behind and the other in front of the booth. Being in front of the booth is sometimes more welcoming, but you then need to be clearly identifiable as a booth staff by having a suitable t-shirt or similar.
  • Do not sit at the booth! Sitting produces a lazy impression, so keep standing all the time. If you want to take a rest go elsewhere.
  • Keep your hands off private laptops, mobile phones, etc. These things should never be around at the booth. If you want to check your mails go elsewhere.
  • Please make sure, that the material you have is presented properly. For more details, see below.
  • Keep your eyes and arms open, look welcoming and easy to communicate with.
  • Do not wear a brand of any disputable organisation including political parties, soccer teams, national flags etc. In the best case you wear an item of FSFE or something neutral.
  • Do not leave anything else on the booth-table than the booth-material (eg your water bottle, food, a text-note etc).
  • Try to use the surrounding: If you have a wall behind you, you can put some posters from different campaigns. These are eyecatchers and will help you attract people to come to the booth and ask questions. Maybe you can also use a pillar or a wall next to you, but in any case ask the organisers and neighbours first before you improve your environment.
  • Make use of our Booth-Equipment (including our branded banner and donation box)

Little helpers

  • use (post) card holders to present our leaflets. It is a matter of taste if you use one card holder for one language or one card holder for one leaflet in its different languages.
  • If you run an outdoor booth, use binder clips to keep stacks of flyers from flying away (pun intended).

  • if you have the chance for an additional bar table, use it for the deeper talks.
  • use social media to get more prominence for your booth using pictures and hashtags from the event

Examples

Freiheit Statt Angst

Wikimania

http://fsfe.org/picturebase/booths/201606-booth-at-wikimania-800px.jpeg A booth can be put up very simple with a single table only. The tinyer the booth, the more it sells out to use your environment to put up posters and balloons to get more attention for your booth.

FSFE Summit

http://fsfe.org/picturebase/booths/201609-booth-at-fsfe-summit-800px.jpeg The booth at our FSFE summit. Worth to mention here is that every item that is sold has a price-tag attached. This is very helpful in many aspects: People can see that an item is sold and not for free, it saves time for everyone by avoiding 100 times a day the question "how much is this" and more introvert people can see the price and decide without having to ask.

Froscon

RMLL / LSM
